On Sunday, Oreo, our beloved first rescue, cafe mascot and customer favorite was rushed to VMCLI Emergency Vet after suddenly losing his vision. Bloodwork and a Snap test were performed to check for infections, and we were devastated when we were told Oreo had tested positive for FELV (feline leukemia virus). This news was terrifying, as FELV is not only fatal to cats but also highly contagious. Naturally, we were extremely worried about Oreo as well as all the cats and kittens at the café who might have been exposed.
The following day, Oreo was seen at Garden City Vet Care. A second Snap test was performed, which thankfully came back negative. Bloodwork was also sent out for further confirmation, and the results verified that the first test was incorrect. This was an incredible relief for all of us at the café.
Unfortunately, Oreo is still without his vision. Further testing revealed an infection that may be the cause. At this point, his next step is to see a veterinary ophthalmologist for more specialized testing. The outlook for his vision returning is not hopeful, but he is now receiving strong antibiotics twice daily to treat the infection and help protect him from further complications.
We are heartbroken that Oreo is going through this, but grateful that he is not battling FELV and that the other café cats are safe. We’ll continue to keep you updated on his progress and appreciate all of your love and support for this sweet boy.
